When caring for patients in disaster situations, perianesthesia critical care nursing requires time-sensitive decisions and changes in ASPAN’s standards of practice that is possible to provide these vulnerable patients. This session presents important concepts of standards of care, expanded nursing practice during different types of disasters that challenge PACU nurses providing care in a surge capacity. This session will also include a review of the following: pertinent surge capacity definitions; important state nurse practice acts; and how to operationalize ASPAN standards of care that focus on the most vulnerable time frames when perianesthesia nurses care for patients. The care continuum for special populations for pediatric, geriatric, pregnant patients as well as specialty surgical and invasive procedures will also be examined for potential risk.
