This session will present the complexities involved in staffing for Phase I postanesthesia patients and the challenges involved in meeting the needs of patient acuity to maintain patient safety. Understanding the critical elements of staffing as written in ASPAN’s 2019-2020 Perianesthesia Nursing Standards, Practice Recommendations and Interpretive Statements and staff flexibility are two strategies for survival. Understanding the impact of workload amplifies Phase I staffing concerns.

(012) Recommendations for Opioid Use in Acute Surgical Pain Management

Expert recommendations for opioid use in surgical pain management are evolving. Implementation of opioid sparing prescribing guidelines based on surgery type, and evidence-based perioperative education for surgical patients receiving opioid prescriptions on discharge is an urgent priority requiring increased adoption in clinical practice. This session will enable the perianesthesia nurse to increase knowledge on current multimodal opioid sparing prescribing guidelines, current patient education requirements for patients who are discharged with opioid prescriptions, and current state policy requirements.
